The 17th edition of Ecotrama 2018

A total of 39 gold medals and 11 silver medals were awarded this year.

The thirteenth edition of Ecotrama was held on 17 March at the headquarters of the Baena Designation of Origin Regulatory Council. It was attended by 14 internationally renowned tasters who, under the direction of José María Penco, tasted the organic oil samples, around 80, received from three countries – Spain, Italy and Portugal.

Ecotrama is organized by Ecovalia and the Provincial Council of Cordoba, in collaboration with the City Council of Baena, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Spanish Association of Olive Tree Municipalities (AEMO), and with the sponsorship of Seipasa, a company dedicated to the research, development and manufacture of natural products for agriculture.

Biocordoba 2018 will host the Ecotrama Awards ceremony.

The level of samples, according to the tasters themselves -some of them from other countries, such as Argentina and Japan- was exceptional.

The director of the competition stated that, in addition to being a pioneer in its sector at national level, there is no doubt that Ecotrama “is one of the two most important organic olive oil competitions in the world”, so that today “Baena is the capital of quality and organic production”.

The president of Ecovalia, Álvaro Barrera, explained that Ecotrama has broken records this year in terms of participation, “probably due to the promotion work that Ecovalia has carried out in national and international forums, such as the Biofach fair”. Barrera pointed out that all the oils that have been awarded this year “will be with us throughout 2018 in all the events in which we participate and will have room for the promotion of organic extra virgin olive oil”.

For his part, the mayor of Baena, Jesús Rojano, said that with this international competition the town would become “the centre of attention for organic extra virgin olive oil”. He considered that this type of event offers organic olive oil mills “a well-deserved reward for the effort they make to obtain top-quality oils”, so that they can also serve as an attraction on the international market with regard to the consumption and purchase of this oil.
